Print Colors vs. Digital Colors 

It's all about ink versus light!

What’s the difference?

Simply put, the biggest difference between print and digital colors is ink versus light. 

The scientific terms of this difference of colors is subtractive vs additive. Ink on paper is created through the subtractive mix of pigments, whereas digital colors are created through the additive mix of red, green, and blue light.

When designing a file for print, you’ll either be creating a file using CMYK colors, Pantone colors, or both. CMYK and Pantone colors are expressed through ink.

When designing for digital pieces, colors are expressed through light using RGB, HEX, or LAB colors. The importance of knowing whether the end result of your file is for print or web is significant in many ways; one of which is so that the correct color types can be selected from the get go.
